
Park reportedly said, "I personally agree with the rights of homosexuals. But the Protestant churches are very powerful in Korea. It isn't easy for politicians."
Korea indeed has a large Christian population and has protested against this year's annual gay pride parade. According to Korea's Asan Institute for Policy Studies, in a survey conducted among 1,500 Korean citizens, 78.5% stated that they objected to homosexuality while 21.5% stated that they had little to no objection to it.
Still, there may be hope for Korea's homosexual population, as Park had won re-election with his anti-homophobia campaign.
