The Korean National Police Agency has responded to claims of police ties to Seungri and Jung Joon Young's controversial chatroom.
On March 13, Commissioner General Min Gap Ryong responded to reports of the chatroom members discussing police ties to the chatroom that included sharing of hidden camera sex tape footage, conversations of alleged date rape, and possible escort service connections. Members of the chatroom referred to a "police chief" who "has my back," and reports state the police chief may also be in reference to the Commissioner General of the Police or the Public Prosecutor General. The Commissioner General position was held by Kang Shin Myung in July of 2016, the time the chatroom messages were originally sent.
Current Commissioner General Min Gap Ryong stated, "I'll thoroughly check to find if there was an incident involved with the police at the time. There is one individual who made the comments, but it's difficult to reveal further details as the investigation is ongoing." He further stated the allegations will be investigated by a special team from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Provincial Special Detective Division, who are also investigating the 'Burning Sun' club case.
Earlier today, lawyer Bang Jung Hyun appeared on CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun Jung's News Show', where he spoke about alleged police ties to the chatroom. Lawyer Bang sent the KakaoTalk chatroom conversation to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission after an anonymous informant alerted him. Bang explained the informant wanted justice, but did not turn to the police as they may find out his identity.
Lawyer Bang stated the informant sent 8 months worth of messages spanning from 2015 to 2016 in different chatrooms, and the content included Jung Joon Young's hidden camera footage, Seungri's alleged escort service, and more. He explained he sent the data to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission as some of the messages seemed to refer to relationships with police officers. If a problem arose among the chatroom members, a member would state, "I contacted [a high ranking official], and he resolved it," and another chatroom member claimed someone from the police "called me to say happy birthday." Lawyer Bang further revealed during his interview that the conversations seemed to also include references to high ranking officials, such as the Commissioner General of the Korean National Police Agency down to regular police officers. Bang also stated some of the messages are related to a business run by Seungri, which may also include drugs or tax crimes.
