Hong Suk Chun was among the 12,000 people who attended Seoul's 24th Annual Queer Culture Festival as part of the local LGBTQ+'s Pride festivities.
Following the event, the television personality, one of Korea's most prominent gay celebrities, took to his personal Instagram account to wish his followers a happy Pride and reflect critically on the experience.
"I thought that the old-fashioned fear that showing up on that one day a year you are given freedom will get you killed without question was over in my generation, but there is still a strong outcry that doesn't accept even this day's freedom," he wrote, referring to anti-LGBTQ+ protestors seen around the festival. "[People from] countries we call developed nations come out in this heat wave to cheer, clap, and dance, and in our country, which we call part of the G10, it seems that we still don't. In a time where embracing diversity has become the global standard, where do we stand? Happy Pride, everyone."
In the photos and video shared in the post, Hong Suk Chun is seen attending the festival, which was held in Seoul's Euljiro 2-ga area. The content includes festival-goers, festival booths run by foreign embassies, anti-LGBTQ+ protesters displaying signs urging others to vote against the anti-discrimination bill, and a Pride-themed temporary tattoo urging equal human rights for all.
Meanwhile, among those who commented Hong Suk Chun includes Kangmin Justin Kim, a publically out Korean American opera singer, who supported him with a celebratory "Happy Pride 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈."
