A refreshing take on legal dramas is set to premiere with 'Law and The City,' tvN’s upcoming weekend series that follows the lives of five associate attorneys navigating the fast-paced yet emotionally resonant world of Seoul’s legal district.
The production press conference took place on July 1 at The Link Hotel in Sindorim, Seoul. Director Park Seung Woo and lead cast members Lee Jong Suk, Moon Ga Young, Kang You Seok, Ryu Hye Young, and Lim Seong Jae gathered to introduce the drama and share their thoughts.
Set in the fictional Hyungmin Building in Seocho-dong, home to many of South Korea’s major law firms, 'Law and The City' focuses on the everyday lives of five junior lawyers. Based on real experiences by screenwriter Lee Seung Hyun, who is a practicing lawyer, the series captures the challenges, laughter, and growth of young professionals in an authentic and relatable way.
Lee Jong Suk shared his personal reason for joining the project. He said he usually gravitates toward intense stories, but realized he had never done a truly relaxed, slice-of-life drama.
"I think we live in a time where people constantly chase dopamine. I wanted to work on something comforting, and this drama offered that opportunity. I wanted to do something warm and grounded with this amazing cast," he said.
Moon Ga Young added that the story is ultimately about people. "We may play lawyers, but it's a human story. It's about how we grow and connect with one another," she explained.
Kang You Seok said that unlike other courtroom dramas, this one feels more natural. "It’s not overly dramatic. It shows how lawyers in Seocho-dong are just ordinary people like anyone else."
The warm tone of the drama is emphasized in scenes where the five associates gather for lunch. Despite being overwhelmed by work and interpersonal struggles, they find time to sit down together and share meals, creating a sense of camaraderie.
Director Park said, "Whether you are happy or going through a tough time, you still need to eat. I wanted to express that simple but powerful idea. Even though the characters work on different floors, there is a shared emotional space created during meals."
The actors appreciated the realism the script brought to their performances. Moon Ga Young mentioned how helpful it was to receive direct feedback from the writer. Ryu Hye Young also pointed out that the writer’s real-life legal background gave her valuable insight into courtroom scenes.
Although the setting involves law firms, the series centers more on everyday moments and emotional experiences. Lee Jong Suk’s character An Joo Hyung, along with the ensemble cast, shows the bittersweet realities of life as a young professional.
Director Park expressed his appreciation for the actors, saying that they made the story come alive on screen. "Other than calling out 'action' and 'cut,' it felt like they created the energy of the scenes themselves," he said.
With its warm tone, slice-of-life approach, and relatable characters, 'Law and The City' offers a comforting alternative to intense legal thrillers.
Ryu Hye Young encouraged viewers to relax and enjoy the drama. "There are a lot of familiar, relatable stories in it. I hope people can watch it with ease."
Lee Jong Suk echoed this, saying, "In times when people are always chasing excitement, I think it's the kind of drama that allows you to slow down and take a breath."
'Law and The City' premieres on Saturday, July 5 at 9:20 PM KST on tvN.
