Former Good Day member and actress Ryu Ji Won has opened up about her ongoing battle with leukemia.
On August 14, Ryu posted on social media, “It’s already been three months since I was suddenly hospitalized and diagnosed with leukemia without even knowing what was happening.” She also shared photos taken during her treatment.
“I have successfully completed my first and second rounds of treatment and am currently undergoing the third,” she wrote. “I am grateful that the first two rounds went by smoothly, to the point where I sometimes forget I am fighting a serious illness.”
Reflecting on her emotional journey, Ryu said, “When I was first diagnosed, I did not want comfort or contact from anyone and felt like I had fallen into a deep pit. But the calls and messages from my family, friends, and loved ones warmed my heart and made me feel better. I realized that humans cannot live alone.”
She also shared her struggle with self-image during treatment. “With my hair gone and significant weight gain, I felt so unfamiliar with myself, as I was used to showing only a polished image. I was afraid of how others would see me, so even posting a single photo was terrifying.”
However, Ryu explained that she has now found the courage to share her story. “I have finally reached a point where I can post photos and updates to show that I am managing relatively well. After a long time, I am writing to let everyone know how I have been.”
Looking ahead, Ryu said, “I still have a big challenge ahead, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, but I want to overcome it quickly, return to my daily life, and be even healthier than before I got sick. I hope everyone stays healthy in their own lives.”
Her candid confession has led to an outpouring of support from fans, who are sending heartfelt wishes for her full recovery.
Ryu Ji Won debuted in 2017 as Jini with the girl group Good Day. After the group disbanded, she re-debuted in 2022 as a member of IRIS, captivating K-pop fans with her charming image, strong vocals, and impressive dance skills.
After ending her idol career, she transitioned into acting. She appeared as group member Chae Ah in the JTBC drama 'Idol,' played the younger version of Kim Ha Neul’s character in the Disney+ series 'Red Swan,' and starred as lead character Yoo Jung in the web drama 'READY TO BEAT.'
