WINNER's Song Min Ho faces possible 1.5 year prison sentence, appeals for second chance at military service

WINNER's Song Min Ho has appealed for a second chance to complete his mandatory service, but prosecutors have requested a prison sentence.

On April 21, the Criminal Division 10 of the Seoul Western District Court, presided over by Judge Sung Joon Gyu, held the first trial hearing for Song Min Ho, who is charged with violating the Military Service Act. Prosecutors sought a sentence of one year and six months in prison.

Around 10 fans were present at the scene. Ahead of the trial, Song Min Ho expressed remorse, stating, “I deeply regret my actions. I sincerely apologize for disappointing so many people. I will faithfully participate in the trial proceedings,” as he bowed his head.

Song Min Ho served as a public service worker from March 24, 2023, to December 23, 2024, with approximately 430 required working days. However, prosecutors revealed that he was absent without leave for 102 days.

He admitted to all charges. His legal representative stated, “He reflects deeply and blames himself for failing to faithfully fulfill his duties. However, we ask the court to take into account the exceptional circumstances when determining the sentence.”

The lawyer added that at the time, Song Min Ho was suffering from mental health issues, including bipolar disorder and panic attacks, as well as physical pain due to a cervical disc rupture, which led to poor judgment.

In his final statement, Song Min Ho expressed his intention to serve again, saying, “I am currently undergoing treatment diligently. I hope to recover my health as soon as possible, and if given the opportunity to re-enlist, I will complete my service faithfully to the end.”

Also present at the hearing was a service supervisor, identified as Mr. Lee, who was indicted on similar charges. He denied the allegations, stating, “I never conspired with Song Min Ho to help him evade service.”

The case began following a report by Dispatch, which alleged that Song Min Ho frequently used sick leave and failed to adhere to work hours. Instead of attending his assigned workplace, he was reportedly seen enjoying parties and camping trips in locations such as Sokcho and Yangyang.

The Military Manpower Administration later verified the facts, and the police forwarded the case in May of last year. Prosecutors subsequently conducted mobile phone forensics and reviewed GPS records, confirming additional instances of unauthorized absences before indicting him without detention.
