Actor Lee Min Ki has come under public attention after being subjected to a significant tax assessment following a recent tax audit. His agency has firmly denied any allegations of intentional tax evasion, stating that the issue arose from differing interpretations of tax law.
On May 20, his agency Sangyoung ENT released an official statement confirming that Lee has consistently complied with his tax obligations since his debut. The agency emphasized that he fully cooperated during the audit process, submitting all relevant documents transparently and responding sincerely to the authorities’ requests.
According to Field News, the Seoul Regional Tax Office conducted an intensive tax investigation into Lee in March and subsequently imposed a substantial tax surcharge. Lee established a one-person agency, M Momi Co., Ltd., in July 2021 in the Gwangjin District of Seoul, which has been used to manage his entertainment activities.
Addressing the report, Sangyoung ENT explained that the issue stemmed from “a difference in interpretation of tax law between the tax authorities and the company regarding expense recognition during corporate operations.” The agency added that there was “no intentional underreporting of income or fraudulent tax evasion,” and confirmed that the assessed amount was paid promptly in accordance with the required procedures following the tax authority’s decision.
The agency also issued an apology for public concern, stating that it would strengthen its accounting and tax management systems to prevent similar issues in the future.
Meanwhile, it has also been reported that actor Lee Yi Kyung, who is also represented by Sangyoung ENT, recently received notice of a tax surcharge related to the operation of his one-person agency. His agency similarly described the matter as arising from differences in interpretation of allowable business expense deductions under tax law.
