Yeon Sang Ho's 'Colony' reveals how its unique infected creatures were brought to life

BY Alec06 · June 3, 2026

As director Yeon Sang Ho's 'Colony' continues its strong box office run, the film has released a new behind the scenes video comparing rehearsal footage with scenes from the finished movie, highlighting the creation of its uniquely unsettling infected creatures.

'Colony' follows a group of isolated survivors trapped inside a building sealed off by a mysterious outbreak as they battle infected beings that continue to evolve in unpredictable ways.

In the newly released video, Yeon explained the concept behind the film's creatures.

"I wanted to create a story built around a special premise and a new type of zombie," he said.

The footage showcases dancers rehearsing intricate movements, underscoring the role of a contemporary dance team in shaping the infected characters. Choreographer Jeon Young described the collaboration as one of the film's greatest strengths.

The dancers bend their limbs at unusual angles and intertwine their bodies to create the creatures' eerie appearance. Rather than relying on CGI, the production used real performers to bring the infected to life, giving the film its distinctive sense of horror.

The infected are also portrayed as constantly evolving through the exchange of information. Yeon emphasized that depicting changes in their bodies throughout the film was a key creative goal.

"The infected updating and evolving themselves became a major part of this film's identity," he said.

Jeon added, "The movements where they throw one another farther or create obstacles to block the characters were both creepy and completely new."

Since its release on May 21, 'Colony' has attracted 3.71 million moviegoers as of June 2. The film became the fastest release of the year to surpass 1 million admissions in four days, 2 million in five days, and 3 million in 10 days, cementing its place among this year's top three box office hits.
