Former After School leader Kahi is drawing mixed reactions after releasing a new contemporary Christian music (CCM) single featuring performance-heavy choreography.
On May 29 KST, the Christian content channel 'Let’s Listen' released the music video for “Psalm 24: King of Glory,” featuring Kahi.
The song is part of the 'Psalm 150 Project', an initiative that reinterprets biblical Psalms through contemporary music. Singer-songwriter Ahn Yeon Jae wrote the lyrics, while K-pop producer Nam Hyung Kwan and singer-songwriter ZHMI collaborated on the composition. The track was released through Christian music distributor Infiniss.
Ahead of the release, Kahi explained in an interview with Mission Fund that she hoped the song would be approachable even for those unfamiliar with Christianity.
“I hope it’s music that people without faith and younger listeners can enjoy without feeling burdened,” she said. “I hope it can naturally become a channel for sharing the gospel.”
Following the music video’s release, however, much of the online discussion centered not on the song itself but on Kahi’s performance.
In the video, Kahi performs energetic choreography while wearing a crop-top outfit. Some of the dance movements reminded viewers of her signature K-pop stage performances, prompting differing opinions online.
Supporters praised the fresh approach, with comments such as, “This feels like a new style of CCM that younger generations can connect with,” “It’s refreshing to break away from traditional formats,” and “Praise can be expressed in many different ways.”
Others, however, questioned whether the performance suited the genre, writing, “It doesn’t match the atmosphere of worship music,” “I’m not sure CCM needs this kind of choreography,” and “The dance stands out more than the song.”
Kahi debuted as the leader of After School in 2009 and became known for her powerful stage presence and charismatic performances. Since then, she has worked as a solo singer, actress, and musical performer. In recent years, she has increasingly participated in faith-based projects, adding a new dimension to her artistic career.
