Indian news tv channel under fire for Xenophobic behaviour towards EXO's Chanyeol

BY abnormalk · May 9, 2020

On May 9, IndiaTV, the most watched Hindi news channel broadcasted a segment on China, criticizing and "exposing" them for their irresponsibility due to the current COVID-19 epidemic. During that segment, they have used a 2015 photo of EXO's Chanyeol at the airport, though he is a Korean personality and has no part in the current situation. Soon after the original broadcast on TV, they have uploaded the entire segment on YouTube.

EXO fans have been quick to point out that what the Indian broadcasting station have done is xenophobic and have started to use the hashtag #ApologizeIndiaTV to ask for an apology to EXO's main rapper.

This is so fcked up, aren't you guys a news channel? How could you use a picture of a KOREAN artist while you're talking about CHINA. This is unprofessional and beyond xenophobic. We're waiting for an apology towards the artist. Literally no words..#ApologizeIndiaTV @indiatvnews pic.twitter.com/caDSFJDAZS

For those who don't know what happened:

IndiaTV did a news coverage criticising & "exposing" China for the Covid-19 pandemic.

They used Pcy's photo even though he is Korean.

This is racist & unacceptable.

Fans are trending #ApologizeIndiaTV. pic.twitter.com/TdUDvT4gdZ

Newscasting stations along with their employees are obligated to share true AND verified informations for their broadcast. All their segments are normally being fact-checked at least two to five times before being aired. The fact that the station thought using a Korean artist photo while criticizing another Asian country is a display the lack of their journalism skills. As of now, India TV has decided to keep the video on their official channel and stay quiet on the situation but we hope that they will step forward to formally apologize to Chanyeol soon.

EDIT: Soon after the release of this article, the video was set on private and many individuals have asked to not use the hashtag but instead e-mail. We hope the situation will be resolved soon!
