UN Chief Antonio Guterres urgently appealed for decisive action on climate change on Thursday, declaring that the record-breaking July temperatures indicate a shift from a warming phase to an "era of global boiling."
Speaking in New York, the secretary-general described the scorching heat across the Northern Hemisphere as a "cruel summer" with disastrous consequences for the entire planet.
Guterres emphasized that the extreme impacts of climate change have been in line with scientists' predictions, but the alarming speed of these changes is surprising. He stressed the urgency of addressing this crisis and highlighted the fossil fuel sector's role in exacerbating the situation, calling their profits and inaction on climate change unacceptable.
With a sense of urgency, the former Portuguese prime minister urged world leaders to step up and take immediate and far-reaching action without hesitation or excuses. In light of the upcoming Climate Ambition Summit in September, Guterres called on developed nations to commit to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and urged emerging economies to aim for the same goal by 2050.
