On December 13 KST, actor Choi Min Shik accepted the 'Best Male Actor' award at the '25th Busan Film Critic's Association Awards' for his performance in the film 'Exhuma'.
During his speech, the veteran actor moved audiences with an apology to the younger generation in the midst of ongoing political turmoil in South Korea.
He said, "I don't wish for a happy weekend for anyone tomorrow. Instead, I would like to say this. The fate of this nation has been thrown down on the cold, hard ground. But even in such times of pain and frustration, there are many young people out in the streets, waving their light sticks. They're calling it the 'impeachment-bong'. Seeing those bright lights, I could not help but feel sorry as a member of the older generation."
Referring to the South Korean president's emergency martial law declaration that threw the nation into chaos on December 3 KST, and the calls for the president's impeachment which followed, Choi Min Shik continued, "I felt sorry that we are allowing the younger generations to live through this ridiculous situation. I've lived through it a few times. I never imagined that it would happen again in my sixties."
The actor then relayed, "In this ridiculous, unbelievable situation, our young people are out there in the cold, waving their lights in the air. They may be smiling on the outside, acting like they're at a concert, but I just feel so sorry that they have to face this situation. I want to take this opportunity to apologize to them. And thank them."
Meanwhile, the National Assembly will convene on December 14 at 4 PM KST to vote on President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment for the second time, after the bill was rejected on December 7 KST. South Koreans are expected to gather for mass rallies throughout Seoul to call on Yoon's impeachment.
