The historical drama film 'The King's Warden,' starring Yoo Hae Jin, Park Ji Hoon, and Yoo Ji Tae, has surpassed 8 million viewers, sparking a nationwide cinematic phenomenon in South Korea. Beyond its box office triumph, the film’s primary filming site, Cheongnyeongpo Meandering Stream in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, has experienced a notable increase in tourist visits.
On March 1, the Yeongwol County official account issued a notice regarding early closures at Cheongnyeongpo Meandering Stream in Yeongwol. The announcement warned that "due to increased visitor numbers, access may be restricted for those arriving after 4 PM" and encouraged tourists to explore nearby attractions for a smoother experience. Signs indicating early ticket closure had already been posted at the site, and safety measures were put in place.
Cheongnyeongpo Meandering Stream is historically significant as the exile site of King Danjong. It is surrounded on three sides by rivers and backed by steep mountains, forming a natural fortress. Access is still only possible by boat, making the location a symbolic reflection of Danjong’s isolated and tragic fate.
On February 25, Yeongwol County Chief Choi Myung Seo stated in a YTN Radio interview that "visitor numbers to Cheongnyeongpo during the Lunar New Year holidays increased more than fivefold compared to last year. The tomb of King Danjong, Jangneung, has also seen a noticeable rise in visitors." He noted that young people and families made up a significant portion of tourists, and that participation in cultural programs and the length of stays had also increased.
The numbers underscore this surge. During the 2025 Lunar New Year, Cheongnyeongpo welcomed 2,006 visitors. By the same period in 2026, that figure jumped to 10,641, which is more than a fivefold increase. As of February 27, weekend train tickets to Yeongwol were sold out, and visitors queued 1 to 3 hours to board the only available boats to Cheongnyeongpo. Traffic congestion around the area further highlighted the overwhelming influx of tourists.
The film’s reinterpretation of King Danjong’s story appears to have drawn audiences to experience the historical site in person. Online reactions, such as "Danjong, are you watching?" reflect fans’ emotional connection to the story and have created a pilgrimage-like atmosphere.
As 'The King's Warden' continues its box office success, the wave of interest is extending beyond cinemas and boosting regional tourism. Attention to Danjong-related historical sites, including Cheongnyeongpo and Jangneung, is expected to remain strong in the near future.
