Lee Mu Jin claimed that his agency, Big Planet Made Entertainment (hereafter Big Planet), has not paid settlement fees amounting to 2.1 billion KRW (1.4 million USD).
The Civil Agreement Division 50 of the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Lee Sang Hoon, held a hearing on May 27 regarding Lee Mu Jin’s request for an injunction to suspend the validity of his exclusive contract with Big Planet.
Lee Mu Jin previously notified Big Planet in March that he was terminating his exclusive contract and later filed for the injunction on May 7.
During the hearing, Lee Mu Jin’s legal representative explained the reason for the injunction request, saying, “Although he notified the agency of the termination of the exclusive contract due to the debtor’s violation of its settlement payment obligations, Lee Mu Jin is still listed as an artist under the debtor’s agency on portal sites and elsewhere.”
The representative added, “For Lee Mu Jin to safely continue his entertainment activities, a judicial decision on this matter is necessary.”
Lee Mu Jin’s side further stated that he had not received settlement payments totaling approximately 2.1 billion KRW from Big Planet.
In response, Big Planet stated, “We do not believe the circumstances surrounding the unpaid settlement fees are entirely attributable to the debtor’s fault.” However, the company also said, “If Mr. Lee Mu Jin wants the suspension of the exclusive contract’s validity, we are willing to accept it.”
The agency added, “We have spent many years together, and the debtor side feels devastated that he is leaving in this manner simply because the company has fallen into financial difficulty.”
The court granted both parties a three-week period to negotiate. If no agreement is reached, the lawsuit will proceed.
Previously, Lee Mu Jin stated through his legal representative that he had not received settlement payments corresponding to the second through fourth quarters of last year and the first quarter of this year.
Big Planet is a label under One Hundred. In addition to Lee Mu Jin, artists including VIVIZ, BE'O, and Lee Seung Gi have also notified the company of contract termination, citing unpaid settlement fees and violations of management support obligations.
Born in 2000, Lee Mu Jin first gained public attention through JTBC’s 'Sing Again.' He later established himself as a singer-songwriter with hit songs including "Traffic Light," "Youth Comics," "Episode," and "Propose."
