MBC has reached the decision to delete Byeon Woo Seok's controversial enthronement scene from drama 'Perfect Crown'.
On May 22 KST, a representative of MBC told various media outlets, "We intend to delete the enthronement scene from all distribution platforms. As the drama is being distributed through multiple platforms, it will take some time for all of the platforms to reflect the change."
Previously, the ending to the 11th episode of 'Perfect Crown' sparked immense controversy among Korean viewers after seemingly portraying Korea as a tributary state of China. The scene, which featured prince Yi Ahn's ascension to the throne, showed the ascension ceremony retaining several similar practices from Korea's pre-modern Joseon dynasty, when Joseon had to abide by certain rules set by the Chinese Empire. The drama soon fell under heavy criticism as many viewers questioned why the story chose to retain selective historical elements while changing or fictionalizing others.
Following the controversy, many of the drama's key figures including lead actors IU and Byeon Woo Seok and director Park Joon Hwa apologized for the offensive historical distortion controversy.
