Park Ji Hoon decided he wanted to remain a military cook, but ultimately failed his quest.
Episode 2 of the TVING original and tvN drama 'The Legendary Kitchen Soldier,' which aired on May 12, showed Kang Sung Jae (portrayed by Park Ji Hoon) winning over Yoon Dong Hyun (played by Lee Hong Nae).
In the episode, battalion commander Baek Chun Ik (played by Jung Woong In) collapsed after eating Kang Sung Jae’s seaweed soup. As Yoon Dong Hyun was dragged away, he shouted, “I have nothing to do with this seaweed soup!” Meanwhile, Kang Sung Jae protested, saying, “There seems to be a misunderstanding. I was told it would taste killer if I made it like this.”
Baek Chun Ik suffered from breathing difficulties due to a perilla seed powder allergy. Hwang Seok Ho (played by Lee Sang Yi), who vowed to properly train them, was told by Baek Chun Ik, “Don’t be too hard on them.” At the same time, Yoon Dong Hyun and Kang Sung Jae were being punished. Jo Ye Rin stepped in, saying, “I was watching from the side, so I’m also responsible. If you’re going to blame someone, blame me too,” as she helped the two up.

Later, Hwang Seok Ho summoned the pair and demanded to know where the sea urchin roe came from. Kang Sung Jae calmly replied, “I believe it was domestic.” Caught off guard, Hwang Seok Ho responded, “Did I ask about the country of origin?” Yoon Dong Hyun then revealed that Park Jae Young (played by Yoon Kyung Ho) had added the sea urchin roe, prompting Hwang Seok Ho to order everything discarded.
Hwang Seok Ho planned to transfer Kang Sung Jae to the TOD duty. While Park Jae Young believed the situation wasn’t enough to justify a reassignment, Hwang Seok Ho insisted he would create a reason. Pretending to worry about Kang Sung Jae, Hwang Seok Ho pressured him, but Kang Sung Jae simply replied, “I’m fine.” Hwang Seok Ho, however, refused to back down. At that moment, a mission appeared stating that Kang Sung Jae had to complete a career-change quest within 72 hours. Failure would mean losing the chance to become a “legendary chef.”
Kang Sung Jae also began seeing other people’s favorability levels toward him. He realized everyone viewed him negatively, and the dislike meters kept rising. After returning from counseling, Kang Sung Jae discovered all the eggs had spoiled while helping Yoon Dong Hyun. Yoon Dong Hyun’s favorability toward him increased after receiving his help. When Jo Ye Rin learned that Hwang Seok Ho intended to transfer Kang Sung Jae, she defended him, saying, “I’m the platoon leader, and I’ll take responsibility,” adding, “It was an excellent seaweed soup.” Hwang Seok Ho coldly replied, “Shouldn’t you be worrying about yourself instead?”

Yoon Dong Hyun, devastated after learning his leave would be canceled along with his junior soldiers’, briefly left his post. During that time, Kang Sung Jae fixed the disastrous dishes Yoon Dong Hyun had prepared. Thanks to him, the soldiers were finally able to enjoy a decent meal for the first time. After tasting the revised bean sprout soup, Yoon Dong Hyun’s feelings toward Kang Sung Jae finally shifted from dislike to favorability.
Determined to keep Kang Sung Jae around, Yoon Dong Hyun eventually admitted that the bean sprout soup and rice were Kang Sung Jae’s work. He also pleaded with him, saying, “Can’t you stay here with us?” Kang Sung Jae then confessed, “I also want to stay as a cook soldier.” The two joined forces to change Hwang Seok Ho’s mind, even preparing perfectly fried pork cutlets and celebrating with a high-five.
However, Hwang Seok Ho dismissed them, saying, “Do you think a company commander would change his mind over just one pork cutlet?” In the end, Kang Sung Jae failed the career-change quest, bringing his “Path of the Chef” journey to an end.
