Ahn Sun Young apologizes after criticism over missed exam controversy

Broadcaster Ahn Sun Young has issued a public apology after facing criticism for blaming a testing organization following her inability to take an English proficiency exam due to tardiness.

On June 10 KST, Ahn shared a statement on social media acknowledging her mistake and taking full responsibility for the situation.

“It was entirely my fault for arriving late to the test venue without fully understanding the examination regulations,” she wrote. “I sincerely apologize to the officials who followed the rules and handled the situation according to established procedures. I also apologize to the other test-takers who prepared for the same exam while respecting those rules.”

The apology comes after Ahn previously revealed that she had been denied entry to an international English-language proficiency exam after missing the admission deadline by one minute. At the time, she expressed frustration over difficulties finding parking and criticized the testing organizer for not providing clearer parking information.

Her comments quickly sparked debate online. While some sympathized with her disappointment, many argued that examination rules must be applied equally to all candidates regardless of circumstances. Critics also questioned her decision to publicly criticize the organizer despite arriving after the designated deadline.

Addressing the backlash, Ahn admitted that her initial response had been emotional.

“At the time, I posted out of disappointment and frustration,” she explained. “Afterward, I realized it was a careless action and deleted the post. Through the feedback and criticism I received, I was able to reflect on my shortcomings.”

She concluded by promising to be more thoughtful in the future and to ensure that a similar situation does not happen again.

Ahn Sun Young debuted as a comedian through MBC’s 11th open recruitment class and married a businessman three years younger than her in 2013. The couple has one son.
