BTS and BLACKPINK among artists who could benefit from new Grammy category

BY Minsoo-Kim · June 17, 2026

The Grammy Awards will introduce a new category recognizing Asian pop music, marking a significant development for artists across the region, including K-pop acts.

According to reports from ABC News on June 16 (local time), the Recording Academy will add five new categories beginning with the 2027 Grammy Awards, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance, alongside new awards for Latin, traditional pop, R&B collaborations, and traditional folk music.

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said the changes reflect the diversity of today’s global music industry and the wide range of artists shaping contemporary music.

Under the new rules, the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will recognize artistic excellence in pop music originating from or widely recognized within Asian markets. The category includes, but is not limited to, K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, and requires meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.

The announcement has generated particular interest within the K-pop industry. Over the years, artists such as BTS and BLACKPINK’s Rosé have earned Grammy nominations and recognition but have yet to secure competitive Grammy wins in major music categories.

Industry observers believe the new award could create additional opportunities for Asian artists to receive Grammy recognition. Entertainment awards prediction outlet Gold Derby described the expansion as positive news for artists including BTS.

However, some critics have expressed concerns that creating a separate Asian Pop category could unintentionally isolate Asian artists from major Grammy races such as Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Others have questioned whether a single category can adequately represent the vast diversity of music across Asia.

Despite the debate, the move is widely viewed as a historic acknowledgment of the growing influence and commercial success of Asian pop music on the global stage.

The 69th Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on February 7 next year.
