SBS has unveiled one of its most ambitious projects for the first half of 2027: a science fiction hero drama that explores the unsettling intersection of artificial intelligence, justice, and human consciousness. Titled 'Nightmare,' the series centers on an AI technology capable of invading dreams and creating relentless nightmares for criminals who cannot be punished by law.
The drama was introduced during the recent 'SBS Drama Media Day: Next Episode' event and immediately drew attention. While its unique premise has sparked curiosity, much of the excitement also stems from the star-studded cast, led by Kim Nam Gil, who is making his long-awaited return to SBS.
'Nightmare' is set in a society where AI technology can infiltrate human dreams and design personalized nightmares for criminals. Rather than imprisoning offenders, the system punishes them by forcing them to relive terrifying nights without rest.
At the heart of the series lies a moral question: If technology can manipulate the human subconscious, can it truly serve justice, or does it become another tool for abuse?
Although categorized as an SF hero drama, 'Nightmare' distinguishes itself from traditional superhero fare. The story blends psychological suspense, vigilante justice, and blurred boundaries between dreams and reality. The series is directed by Lee Dan, known for 'Taxi Driver 2' and 'Our Beloved Summer,' with a script by Kim Gyu Won. The drama is also slated to stream on Netflix.
The biggest draw for many viewers is Kim Nam Gil's return to SBS.

The actor last appeared on the network in 'The Fiery Priest 2,' which aired in late 2024. The original 'The Fiery Priest' became a major ratings success in 2019, surpassing 20% nationwide viewership and finishing as SBS's highest-rated drama of the year. Its sequel also maintained a strong fan following.
In 'Nightmare,' Kim Nam Gil plays Kim Tae Yi, a detective in the Violent Crimes Unit at Nambu Police Station. After years undercover, Tae Yi returns to active duty and becomes entangled in a case connected to the dream-manipulating AI technology.
Known for his sharp instincts and relentless investigative skills, Tae Yi stands apart from typical police protagonists. Rather than relying on firearms, he fights with a blade and is driven by a strong sense of justice despite the trauma of losing his parents at a young age. His journey into a far-reaching conspiracy forms the backbone of the story.
Another notable addition is Lee Yoo Mi, who returns to SBS for the first time in eight years.
Since her previous SBS appearance, she has built an impressive career through projects such as the Netflix hits 'Squid Game' and 'All of Us Are Dead,' JTBC's 'Strong Girl Nam Soon,' and films including 'Young Adult Matters' and 'Hostage: Missing Celebrity.'

Her recent performance in 'As You Stood By' earned praise for its emotionally intense portrayal of a domestic violence survivor, further cementing her reputation as one of Korea's most versatile young actresses.
In 'Nightmare,' Lee Yoo Mi plays Jang Gyu Eun, a police officer haunted by a tragic childhood incident. Determined to seek revenge, she joins forces with Kim Tae Yi while serving as a victim support officer at Nambu Police Station. Their partnership is expected to become one of the drama's central relationships.
Acclaimed actor Jo Hyun Chul has also been cast as Go Jung Hoon, the younger son of a powerful construction company chairman.

Jo Hyun Chul gained widespread recognition for his award-winning performance as Cho Seok Bong in the Netflix series 'D.P.,' earning honors at both the Baeksang Arts Awards and the Directors Cut Awards. His notable credits also include 'Memories of the Alhambra,' 'Hotel Del Luna,' 'Inspector Koo,' 'One Day Off,' and 'Aema.'
Beyond acting, Jo has also found success as a filmmaker. His directorial debut, You and Me, attracted more than 40,000 moviegoers and earned both Best New Director and Best Screenplay at the 45th Blue Dragon Film Awards.
While details surrounding his character's connection to the main plot remain under wraps, viewers are already anticipating another standout performance.
Shin Se Kyung will make a special appearance as Yoon Jin, a detective in the Integrated Investigation Team.

Yoon Jin played a key role in helping Kim Tae Yi survive his years undercover and continues to pursue him even after his assignment ends. Though her role is limited, she is directly tied to the protagonist's past and is expected to have a significant impact on the story.
The actress most recently received praise for her performance as North Korean restaurant worker Chae Sun Hwa in the film Humint, released in February.
