It's been a while since Kihyun stood in the spotlight on his own — about three years and nine months, to be exact. That wait is nearly over.
On June 21, Starship Entertainment caught fans off guard by dropping a coming-soon video for the MONSTA X main vocalist's second mini album, "Borderline," through the group's official channels. The record lands on July 7, and it marks Kihyun's first proper solo move in years.
The teaser ran with a travel theme. It moved fast past boarding gates, ticketing counters, and airport display boards, building a cinematic sense of departure, then cut to a striking shot of a giant door swinging open in the middle of a clear blue sky. Little symbolic touches were scattered throughout — including the phrase "KIHYUN AIRLINE" — and fans were quick to start trading theories about where this new chapter is headed.
"Borderline" carries some weight for him. His last solo release was the mini album "Youth" in October 2022, which came after his solo debut single "Voyager" earlier that year. "Voyager" stamped his own musical color outside the group; "Youth" dug into the growing pains that come with, well, being young. So there's real curiosity about which side of himself he'll show this time.
None of this is a surprise to anyone who's followed him. Since debuting as MONSTA X's main vocalist in 2015, Kihyun has built a name as a trust-and-listen kind of singer — big, controlled vocals, careful emotion, a tone that holds up across genres. Between drama OSTs and festival stages, he's already shown he can carry a moment by himself. On July 7, he gets to do it on his own terms again.
