South Korea national football team defender Seol Young Woo has announced legal action against individuals posting malicious comments and spreading false information online.
On June 25, Seol's agency, Sporty Project, released a statement on social media announcing plans to file criminal complaints against those responsible for malicious posts, defamation, and the circulation of false rumors.
The agency emphasized that it welcomes constructive criticism and diverse opinions about Seol's performances, describing them as an important part of a healthy sports culture.
However, it made clear that abusive behavior crossing the line would not be tolerated. The agency stated, "Profanity, personal attacks, and other abusive expressions go beyond the scope of legitimate criticism."
It added that such behavior "can never be justified" and has caused emotional distress not only to the player but also to his family and those around him.
The agency also revealed that it has been continuously monitoring online posts and comments targeting Seol. The statement warned, "We will respond firmly to any illegal acts without leniency."
Seol recently represented South Korea at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, appearing in every match of the tournament. He started at right wing-back in the team's third group-stage match.
South Korea conceded the opening goal in the 63rd minute following a counterattack by South Africa. Despite efforts to equalize, the team suffered a 1-0 defeat and finished third in its group.
Following the match, Seol accepted responsibility for the result. "As a defender, if we hadn't conceded, even a draw would have been enough for us to advance on our own," he said. "I feel a great sense of responsibility."
