A recent controversy surrounding the airport security screening behavior of IVE member Jang Won Young has ultimately triggered a concrete overhaul of official airport operational guidelines in South Korea.
According to the official website of the Korea Airport Corporation (KAC) on June 20, a new, explicit clause has been added to the "Boarding Gate Identity Verification and Ticket Inspection" section under domestic flight guidelines. The newly inserted text explicitly states: "Please temporarily remove masks, hats, and sunglasses to allow for identity verification and matching." This officially codifies a procedure that had previously been delivered only verbally by security personnel.
This systematic change stems from a video captured on May 30, when Jang Won Young was departing through Gimpo International Airport for a scheduled event in Shanghai, China.
In the video, Jang Won Young was seen keeping her hat on while only slightly lowering her mask in front of a security screening agent. The footage quickly ignited a fierce debate online regarding fairness and equity, with some critics questioning, "Is this special treatment for a celebrity?" and arguing that "the exact same security standards must apply to all passengers without exception."
As the controversy intensified, a formal civil complaint was filed on June 15 with the Security Management Department of the Gimpo Airport Operations Division, demanding that the criteria and guidelines for identity verification be made clear and transparent.
In response, the Korea Airport Corporation firmly drew a line on June 16, stating, "There was absolutely no special treatment or privilege given to the celebrity." However, the corporation noted that it is strengthening verbal instructions for passengers to remove face-concealing items during ID checks and is requesting additional cooperation if a passenger remains difficult to identify.
Furthermore, taking this recent controversy as a turning point, the corporation announced its policy to aggressively reinforce public awareness regarding identity verification procedures through various channels, including updates to its official website.
Commenting on how a single celebrity's actions led to the detailed codification of airport security protocols, netizens have responded positively, calling it "a constructive change born out of public feedback" and expressing hope that "the rules will be applied fairly and strictly to every single passenger moving forward."
