IVE's agency Starship Entertainment recently won a lawsuit against the operator of the infamous cyberwrecker YouTube channel 'Sojang.' However, it was revealed that the operator has filed an appeal against the ruling.
According to legal sources, on June 19, 'Sojang' submitted an appeal on June 18.
Previously, on June 4, Judge Choi Mi Young of the Seoul Central District Court’s 50th Civil Division ruled in the first trial that Sojang's operator must pay 50 million KRW (approximately 36,500 USD) in damages to Starship Entertainment. The agency had originally filed a claim for 100 million KRW (approx. 73,000 USD).
Sojang gained notoriety for spreading false rumors about celebrities through videos from October 2021 to June 2023. Her content targeted artists such as Jang Won Young of IVE, BTS, EXO, aespa, and Kang Daniel. Reports stated that she earned approximately 250 million KRW (around 180,000 USD) through these videos.
As a result, both Jang Won Young and Starship Entertainment pursued civil and criminal lawsuits against him. In the criminal case, the court sentenced Sojang's operator to two years in prison, suspended for three years. Prosecutors, dissatisfied with the outcome, have also filed an appeal. Additionally, Jang Won Young won a partial victory in a separate damages lawsuit, with the court ordering Sojang to pay her 50 million KRW (36,500 USD).
Meanwhile, Sojang is also facing ongoing lawsuits from BTS, EXO, aespa, and Kang Daniel.
