'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' has seized the box office lead in its opening weekend.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing network, 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' drew 427,362 viewers from July 25 to 27. Since its release on July 23, it has maintained the No. 1 spot for five consecutive days, with a cumulative audience of 627,890.
'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' is a fantasy action film where the world seen in a novel comes to life in the real world. The story follows Kim Dok Ja (Played by Ahn Hyo Seop), the novel's sole reader, as he struggles to survive. The cast includes Ahn Hyo Seop, Lee Min Ho, Chae Soo Bin, Shin Seung Ho, Nana, and BLACKPINK's Jisoo.
The film is based on the popular web novel of the same name by author Sing Shong, which has amassed over 200 million global views. Unsurprisingly, there was much anticipation for the film from the fans of the original even before the premiere.
However, the film drew a mixed reaction upon release. Many viewers were impressed by the grand-scale VFX, especially the tense creature battle scenes set in the ruins of Seoul. Additionally, the action sequences and performances by Ahn Hyo Seop and Lee Min Ho received much praise.
On the other hand, the film's lack of detail in the storytelling received criticism. Viewers found the story difficult to fully engage with and connect with the characters, with too much focus on the spectacular video effects. Some original fans expressed disappointment, saying the film fell short of their expectations.
