Choi Woo Sik and Moon Ga Young confirmed to lead historical period drama 'Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid'

Choi Woo Sik and Moon Ga Young are set to star together in a new period romance drama.

On June 17, the production team behind tvN’s upcoming series 'Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid' (written by Moru and Seolsup, directed by Heo Jin Ho and Yoo Beom Sang) unveiled its main cast lineup, including Choi Woo Sik, Moon Ga Young, Heo Nam Jun, Yoo Jae Myung, Kang Han Na, Kim Yeo Jin, and Gong Seung Yeon.

Based on the webtoon of the same name, 'Whale Star' is a youth romance drama set in Gyeongseong (colonial-era Seoul) in 1926. The story begins when a maid working for a pro-Japanese family rescues an independence activist who has fallen into the sea.

Choi Woo Shik will play Kang Ui Hyun, an independence activist born into a family headed by a pro-Japanese collaborator. While carrying out operations for Korea’s liberation, he develops feelings for the maid who saves his life.

Moon Ga Young takes on the role of Heo Su Ah, a kind-hearted and capable maid serving a pro-Japanese household. After meeting Kang Ui Hyun and fellow independence activist Song Hae Su, she finds herself caught in a whirlwind of emotions.

Heo Nam Jun portrays Song Hae Su, an independence fighter who lost his family in the Primorye tragedy. Driven by an unwavering commitment to the cause, he is willing to sacrifice his life for the independence movement. A certain incident leaves him tragically entangled with Heo Su Ah.

Yoo Jae Myung plays Kang Geun Hyung, Kang Ui Hyun’s father. A pro-Japanese collaborator who seeks to use his son for his own gain, he betrays his nation in pursuit of ambition and is expected to bring tension to the story.

Kang Han Na stars as Han Yeon Kyung, a woman who lost her husband and family while participating in the independence movement. Despite her grief, she remains steadfast in her commitment to Korea’s liberation.

Kim Yeo Jin will appear as Hwang Sun Im, the owner of Café Whale Star and a spiritual pillar for Gyeongseong’s independence activists. She combines gentle leadership with commanding charisma as she guides members of the movement.

Gong Seung Yeon will make a special appearance as Yeo Yun Hwa, the young lady whom Heo Su A once served. Although she often treats Su A coldly, she secretly cares for her deeply.

'Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid' is scheduled to premiere next year on tvN.
