The comedy film 'Wild Sing,' starring Kang Dong Won, Uhm Tae Goo, Park Ji Hyun, and Oh Jung Se, is heating up the Korean box office from its very first day in theaters.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing network on June 4, 'Wild Sing' (directed by Son Jae Gon) attracted 160,758 moviegoers on its opening day, ranking No. 1 among newly released films and No. 2 overall at the box office. Its cumulative admissions currently stand at 182,079.
The opening score surpassed the first-day performance of this year’s biggest box office hit, The Man Living With the King, which drew 117,783 viewers on opening day. The film later amassed 16.89 million admissions and dominated theaters this year. 'Wild Sing' exceeding that opening figure has drawn considerable attention, especially as the film rises amid fierce competition from blockbuster releases. Industry watchers are now closely following whether the comedy can become a surprise summer hit.

'Wild Sing' follows the story of fictional co-ed dance trio “Triangle,” a group that dominated the Korean music scene in the 1990s. The group consists of leader and main dancer Hwang Hyun Woo (played by Kang Dong Won), vocalist Domi (Park Ji Hyun), and rapper Sang Goo (Uhm Tae Goo).
Although the trio debuts with massive popularity, they eventually disband following a plagiarism controversy. Twenty years later, the members receive an offer to reunite for a comeback performance after Hyun Woo is allowed to perform at a concert promoting Gangwon Province’s World Expo bid. However, the condition is that Triangle must reunite in full and perform their hit songs together.

Two decades later, Hyun Woo has become a forgotten celebrity, Sang Goo works as an insurance actuary, and Domi has become the daughter-in-law of a wealthy conglomerate family. The film centers on Hyun Woo’s efforts to reunite the scattered members for one last chance at success.
The film’s humor is further amplified by Oh Jung Se, who plays ballad singer Choi Sung Gon, a character known for the bittersweet distinction of ranking No. 2 for 39 consecutive weeks. Once dubbed the “original eardrum boyfriend,” Choi later reappears as a hunter specializing in capturing wild animals, drawing laughter with every appearance.
Meanwhile, Shin Ha Kyun makes a special appearance as Park Yong Goo, the entertainment agency CEO who once created Triangle before mysteriously disappearing.

Director Son Jae Gon returns with his first new project in six years since 'Secret Zoo' (2020). He is known for films such as 'My Scary Girl,' 'Villain and Widow,' and 'Secret Zoo,' all praised for their quirky premises and sharp comedic sensibilities.
The actors’ preparation process has also become a hot topic among moviegoers.
Kang Dong Won reportedly performed breakdancing and headspins himself for the role of Triangle leader Hwang Hyun Woo.
Uhm Tae Goo, who portrays the group’s youngest member and energetic rapper Sang Goo, spent approximately five months practicing choreography alongside Kang Dong Won and Park Ji Hyun.

He reportedly said, “Every time I went to the practice room, I kept seeing Kang Dong Won standing upside down and falling repeatedly while trying to perfect headspins and other moves.”
Park Ji Hyun plays Domi, the group’s center and main vocalist. Though she appears innocent and cute on the surface, the character is actually carefree and charismatic, adding another layer of comedy to the film.
'Wild Sing' is distributed by Lotte Entertainment. The film runs for 107 minutes and is rated for viewers ages 12 and older.

Audience reactions shared through Naver movie reviews included comments such as: “I laughed so hard I cried for the first time in a while,” “This is the funniest movie I’ve seen this year,” “Oh Jung Se absolutely steals the show,” and “It feels like the kind of movie that could become a massive word-of-mouth hit.”
While 'Wild Sing' gained momentum on opening day, the box office crown remains firmly in the hands of Colony.
According to the Korean Film Council on June 4, 'Colony' attracted 331,490 viewers that day, maintaining its No. 1 position at the box office. The film’s cumulative admissions have now reached 4,043,759.
The movie has become this year’s fastest-growing hit, surpassing 1 million viewers in four days, 2 million in five days, 3 million in 10 days, and 4 million in just 14 days. It has also comfortably exceeded its break-even point of 3 million admissions.

'Colony' tells the story of survivors trapped inside a quarantined building during a mysterious infectious outbreak, fighting against infected beings that continue evolving into unpredictable forms.
The film is directed by Yeon Sang Ho, best known for Train to Busan, and features a star-studded cast including Jun Ji Hyun, Koo Kyo Hwan, Ji Chang Wook, Shin Hyun Been, Kim Shin Rok, and Ko Soo.
Meanwhile, Backroom ranked No. 3 at the box office after adding 114,110 moviegoers for a cumulative total of 572,775 admissions.
As Colony continues its dominant box office streak past the 4 million mark, 'Wild Sing' has emerged as a strong challenger after drawing 160,000 viewers on opening day. Attention is now turning to whether director Son Jae Gon’s signature comedy style and the cast’s dedication can translate into long-term box office success.
